Scotland: Clan Gunn region
Did you know that the Gunn and Keith clans had a feud that started in the 1400s? There was an official peace treaty in 1978. The feud was for many reasons, but the main story told (and HOW it’s told depends on whom you ask) involved a Keith lad and a Gunn lass, and the abduction (or escape) of the Gunn lass on the day she was supposed to marry another. A detail that holds true among the variations is that there was a challenge issued by the Gunns, 12 horse against 12 horse. The Gunn warriors showed up, as did the Keiths, but the Keiths has 2 men per horse! I mean, technically they only had 12 horses… The Gunns were fierce. The Keiths were clever.
Kevin’s lineage includes the Gunn clan, so this story is particularly amusing for us. We traveled to the region where that battle (and later, the peace treaty) was held. However, we could only get so close because it seemed like we would be tromping on private property to get there. Maybe we can take a closer look in the future, to see if there’s an acceptable path to it, should we have the opportunity to visit again.
