Wick Memorial – for those lost at sea

Black Saturday “Lest We Forget” – On the evening of Friday 18th August 1848, 800 boats had left Wick Harbour for their fishing grounds. In the early hours of Saturday morning a terrible deadly storm struck the North East Coast of Scotland. Some boats “ran for home” managing to successfully shelter from the storm. Unfortunately, others were not so luck as the tide had fallen by the time they arrived in Wick Bay early Saturday morning. As they attempted to navigate the harbour entrance, many boats were thrown onto the rocks and piers due to the ferocity of the waves and winds. Official records state that 37 lives, a recorded on the memorial, were lost, while their families and friends looked on from the shore in horror.
